Kitaono Blanc Tsuchi is Inishie no Sato Winery's ongoing single-vineyard white blend within its standard Four Seasons series (冬春夏秋シリーズ) — but unlike the line's other bottlings, which take on a new name and grape each vintage under a fixed 'season' label, this cuvee keeps its own name release after release, built each year from whatever combination of Kerner, Gewurztraminer and Riesling the Kitaono-district harvest allows. The name pairs the French 'Blanc' (white) with the Japanese '土' (tsuchi, 'soil'), marking it as the winery's clearest expression of its high-elevation (roughly 850m) Kitaono terroir in white form. Winemaker Masahiro Inagaki named it his personal favorite from the 2022 lineup: that vintage blended 69% Kerner, 24% Gewurztraminer and 7% Riesling (384 bottles, product code KrGe.Ri-0004), with the Kerner and Gewurztraminer portion aged about 10 months in old oak barrels for a slow, gentle oxidative complexity rather than oak flavor, then blended with separately vinified Riesling to restore acidity — a change from earlier vintages, which aged roughly a year in stainless steel tank instead. The 2025 vintage, made after a night harvest that began at 3am to capture the fruit at its peak, shifted to 82% Kerner and 18% Gewurztraminer with no Riesling at all, since that year's Riesling crop was too small to include (660 bottles).
Winemaker Masahiro Inagaki himself singled this out as his favorite of the 2022 lineup, and it's easy to see why — the shift to old-oak aging for the Kerner and Gewurztraminer gives it a textured, slow-oxidative complexity that the winery's other whites don't attempt. This is Inishie no Sato's most idiosyncratic white, and its blend keeps evolving vintage to vintage, so no two years taste quite the same.
New to wine?
Aromatic like an Alsace white but bone dry on the palate — a friendly way into lychee-and-rose-scented Gewurztraminer blends without any sweetness to second-guess.
Food Pairings
The winery's own pairing recommendation is spiced grilled shrimp and other spicy, ethnic-leaning seafood dishes. Serve it well chilled in a large-bowled glass and take your time — the aromatics shift noticeably as the wine warms in the glass, moving from white flowers and stone fruit toward honey and quince.
When to drink it
A warm-weather aperitif or a bottle to open with spicy Southeast Asian takeout — its floral lift and dry finish make it an easy match for chili and lemongrass.
Terroir & Winemaking
A blend of Kerner, Gewurztraminer, and (in most vintages) Riesling grown in the high-elevation (roughly 850m) Kitaono district of Shiojiri, Nagano — part of Inishie no Sato Winery's standard Four Seasons (冬春夏秋) series. Since the 2022 vintage, Kerner and Gewurztraminer are aged separately for about 8-10 months in old oak barrels for gentle oxidative development rather than oak flavor, then blended with a separately fermented Riesling lot to add acidity; earlier vintages instead aged roughly a year in stainless steel tank. 2022: Kerner 69% / Gewurztraminer 24% / Riesling 7%, 384 bottles, product code KrGe.Ri-0004. 2025: Kerner 82% / Gewurztraminer 18% (no Riesling due to a small harvest that year), 660 bottles, hand-picked in a night harvest starting at 3am. Dry style throughout.
