Founded in autumn 2014 in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture, Ina Wine Workshop (legally Murata Ltd.) is a tiny, husband-and-wife-run winery operated out of a converted former clinic in the Misuzu district. Winemaker Jun Murata, who spent roughly 30 years as head winemaker at several Nagano wineries before striking out on his own, deliberately calls the operation a 'workshop' rather than a winery: it owns no vineyards of its own and instead specializes in flexible, small-lot contract winemaking, accepting as little as 100kg of fruit from local grape and apple growers. Rather than imitating European or New World styles, Murata's stated aim is to make wine that resonates with local palates and everyday meals in the Ina Valley (the Tenryu River Wine Valley area of Shinshu), working closely with regional farmers on varieties such as Niagara, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Kerner, alongside cider made from local apples.
Who Is This For?
For drinkers curious about hyper-local, small-production Japanese wine, and for home growers or farmers interested in custom contract winemaking from as little as 100kg of fruit.
