About Geheimrat J. Wegeler
Weingüter Geheimrat J. Wegeler is a founding VDP member in the Rheingau, tracing its roots to 1857 when Julius Wegeler, co-owner of the Deinhard sparkling wine house, began acquiring vineyards in Rüdesheim, Geisenheim, Johannisberg and Oestrich-Winkel; the estate has been headquartered at Friedensplatz in Oestrich-Winkel since 1884. Now guided by the fourth generation of the Wegeler family together with Ralf Frenzel, the Rheingau estate farms roughly 41 hectares dedicated entirely to Riesling across VDP.GROSSE LAGE vineyards such as Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg, Geisenheimer Kläuserweg, Winkeler Hasensprung and Oestricher Lenchen. Since its 1983 debut, the flagship dry Riesling "Geheimrat J" — blended from up to 16 Grand Cru sites, modeled on the Bordeaux château idea — has become one of the Rheingau's benchmark wines, regularly earning high marks from Falstaff and Gault&Millau. The family also owns a sister estate on the Mosel, co-owning the celebrated Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard.
