Launched in March 2022, Blush is Funao Winery's rosé made from 100% Muscat Bailey A grapes grown in the Funao district of Kurashiki, Okayama. Rather than pressing the fruit, the winery uses only the free-run juice that drains naturally from the crushed grapes, which keeps color extraction minimal and yields the wine's signature pale, blush-pink hue — the name itself referencing the English word for a blushing cheek. Finished in an off-dry (yaya karakuchi) style, it carries Muscat Bailey A's candy-like, strawberry-and-cherry aromatics with a gentle sweet-tart balance and refreshing acidity.

Sommelier's Note

Blush shows what free-run-only extraction can do for Muscat Bailey A: instead of the grape's usual candy-red intensity, you get a whisper of color and a softer, more food-friendly rosé — arguably Funao Winery's most versatile bottle at the table.

New to wine?

A gentle, easy-drinking rosé with none of the tannin or heaviness that intimidates wine newcomers — a great first Japanese rosé.

Food Pairings

The pale color and off-dry profile make it versatile with lightly seasoned dishes: salt-grilled yakitori, tempura with salt, sushi, and cured ham. Its bright fruit character also suits fruit tarts and berry-based desserts.

When to drink it

Well suited to casual gatherings, picnics, and as an aperitif before a Japanese-style meal; the gift box also makes it a good present.

Terroir & Winemaking

Produced from 100% Muscat Bailey A grown in Funao, Kurashiki. Made using only free-run juice released by the grapes' own weight after crushing — without mechanical pressing — to limit anthocyanin extraction from the skins and achieve the wine's characteristic pale blush color. Bottled at 750ml in a gift box, 11% ABV, finished off-dry (yaya karakuchi).
