Ferdinando Principiano
フェルディナンド・プリンチピアーノ
Purity-driven, low-intervention Barolo from Monforte d'Alba
Ferdinando Principiano is a family winery based in Monforte d'Alba, in the heart of Piedmont's Barolo appellation. The Principiano family has cultivated vines in the Langhe since the mid-18th century; Ferdinando took over the estate in 1993 with just 7 hectares inherited from his father and grandfather, and has since grown it to roughly 20-21 hectares, including plots in Serralunga d'Alba and the Alta Langa. Since 2004 he has farmed organically and, informally, biodynamically, avoiding synthetic chemicals and even purchasing surrounding forestland and digging ponds to support local biodiversity. In 2003 he abandoned barriques in favor of large Slavonian oak botti, fermenting with native yeasts, using long macerations and minimal sulfur to let the Langhe terroir speak with purity and elegance.
