About Elgin Vintners
Elgin Vintners is a pioneering collective of Elgin Valley growers established in the early 2000s, when Dr. Max Hahn acquired the historic Elgin Orchards farm (dating to 1890) and, together with fellow grower James Rawbone-Viljoen and other local farmers, began converting former apple orchards into vineyards as the region's cool climate proved ideal for premium wine. Based on the Elgin Orchards property, the brand pools fruit from several family farms in South Africa's coolest wine region, where sea breezes off the Kogelberg and Hottentots Holland mountains and a wide diurnal swing (roughly 25°C by day, 12°C at night) slow ripening and preserve acidity. Since 2022 winemaking has been led by Gus Dale, trained in Burgundy at Maison Champy, who has pushed the estate further toward organic viticulture and site-driven, single-cultivar wines under the guiding philosophy "Minimal Intervention. Maximum Care." The range centers on Pinot Noir — the estate's flagship and most decorated wine — alongside Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend, Merlot and Syrah. Elgin Vintners wines have won an International Trophy and Gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards, Double Gold at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, and an overall trophy in the invitation-only Global Fine Wine Challenge for its Merlot.
