Dr. Crusius

ドクター・クルジウス

A 14th-generation Nahe estate mastering the volcanic terroir of Traisen since 1576.

About Dr. Crusius

Weingut Dr. Crusius is a historic VDP member estate in Traisen, Nahe, where the Crusius family has cultivated vines since 1576 across 14 generations. Hans Crusius transformed the mixed farm into a dedicated wine estate in the 1950s, and today the estate — led by Dr. Peter Crusius with his daughter Rebecca, a Geisenheim-trained winemaker, now at the helm — farms roughly 21-30 hectares, over 70% classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE or VDP.GROSSE LAGE. Key sites such as Bastei, Rotenfels, Felsenberg, Kupfergrube, Steinberg and Mühlberg sit on steep, south-facing slopes of volcanic porphyry, slate and iron-rich soils that alternate over short distances, giving the wines their signature mineral precision. Riesling accounts for around 55-60% of plantings, complemented by Weissburgunder and small amounts of Pinot Noir/Frühburgunder, vinified with flexible cellar techniques (spontaneous and selected yeasts, stainless steel and traditional German oak from a local cooperage) in the estate's vaulted cellar built in 1888.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the signature style of Dr. Crusius wines?
Wines defined by mineral precision, vibrant acidity and terroir transparency, drawn from volcanic porphyry, slate and iron-rich soils around Traisen — increasingly crisp and clean under the current generation's stewardship.
What are the estate's most important vineyard sites?
Over 70% of the estate's vineyards are classified VDP.Erste Lage or VDP.Grosse Lage, including Bastei, Rotenfels, Felsenberg, Kupfergrube, Steinberg and Mühlberg — all within about 8 km of the winery.
Are Dr. Crusius wines suitable for aging?
Yes. The top dry Rieslings from Grosse Lage sites (labeled GG) have the structure and acidity to develop beautifully over many years.
Who runs the estate today?
Dr. Peter Crusius remains involved as owner, while his daughter Rebecca Crusius, a Geisenheim University graduate, took over winemaking leadership in 2019 as the 14th generation of the family.
Do these wines pair well with Japanese cuisine?
The high acidity and mineral backbone of the dry Rieslings make them an excellent match for sushi, sashimi and tempura.
