Klein Karoo farm distilling brandy and dessert wine since the 1800s
About Domein Doornkraal
Domein Doornkraal is a historic family-run wine and brandy farm at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains, near De Rust in the Klein Karoo, at the southern gateway to the Meiringspoort pass between the Little and Great Karoo. The Le Roux family has farmed the property since the late 1800s, growing lucerne, vegetable seed, and pasture alongside vineyards, and both making wine and distilling brandy for three generations. In 1936, PK le Roux (grandfather of today's winemaker) began producing dessert wines, and his son Gerrit "Swepie" le Roux added dry red wine in 1978 before opening a farm-stall wine house (the Doornkraal Padstal) with his wife Ann in 1986, where visitors can taste and buy the estate's wines alongside local Klein Karoo produce. Piet le Roux, the current third-generation winemaker, now crafts around seventeen wines from roughly 38 hectares of vineyard, producing about 6,000 cases a year. The Klein Karoo's warm, dry climate here (often likened to Portugal's Douro Valley) is well suited to fortified and dessert wines, and Doornkraal's range spans the crowd-pleasing Tickled Pink Muscat sparkling wine, Chenin Blanc, the oak-free Kannaland Merlot, and a celebrated line-up of fortified dessert wines including Kaptein, Majoor, Korporaal, Jerepigo, a Veritas Double Gold-winning Pinta, and the Silver Veritas Diep Tanige Port. Beyond the cellar, Doornkraal's philosophy centres on hospitality and storytelling around the family's yellowwood dining table, positioning the farm as much as a Route 62 gathering place as a producer of approachable, distinctly Klein Karoo wines.
Who Is This For?
Travelers on the Route 62 / Klein Karoo wine route who want an authentic farm-stall experience, and drinkers curious about South Africa's fortified Jerepigo-style dessert wines and easy-drinking Muscat sparkling wine.
