Domaine Nakajima's Pétillant Rosé is a méthode ancestrale sparkling wine made entirely from Kyoho, the large-berried table grape ubiquitous in Japanese backyards and fruit stands. Winemaker Yutaka Nakajima partially sun-dries the harvested Kyoho for two to four weeks to concentrate its natural sugars and aromatics, then foot-treads the shriveled berries and lets indigenous yeasts carry out fermentation. The wine is bottled while fermentation is still active, capturing a gentle, natural fizz with no dosage, no added sulfites, and no fining or filtration. First released around 2018, it is produced in small quantities every vintage (recent bottlings run to roughly 10,000-11,000 bottles) and regularly sells out both in Japan and among natural-wine importers overseas. In the glass it shows a pale, translucent rose color with a light haze, red-berry aromatics, and a juicy, refreshing acidity that plays against its faintly wild, table-grape character.

Sommelier's Note

Proof that even a common table grape like Kyoho can make a serious, terroir-driven wine in the right hands — this is one of the most distinctive and sought-after pét-nats coming out of Japan today.

New to wine?

A friendly, playful introduction to Japanese natural wine — fruity, gently fizzy, and easy to enjoy even if you've never tried a pét-nat before.

Food Pairings

A natural match for Japanese food: try it with tempura (especially eaten with a pinch of salt), sushi, and delicately dashi-seasoned dishes, where its bright acidity and gentle bubbles cut through richness without overpowering subtle flavors. It also works well with fresh fruit salads, light appetizers, soft cheeses, and mildly spiced Asian dishes.

When to drink it

Great for casual picnics, weekend brunch, or as a relaxed aperitif before a Japanese-style dinner.

Terroir & Winemaking

Method: méthode ancestrale (pétillant naturel). 100% Kyoho grapes are sun/shade-dried for roughly two to four weeks to concentrate sugars, foot-trodden, and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts; the wine is bottled before primary fermentation finishes to retain natural carbonation. No dosage, no added sulfites, unfined and unfiltered, resulting in a light natural haze. Vintages vary from year to year (releases have run from around 2018 through 2024); please check the current vintage with your retailer, as exact ABV and dosage can shift slightly year to year (approx. 11.5% ABV in recent vintages). Bottled in 750ml format.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grape is Domaine Nakajima's Pétillant Rosé made from?
It is made entirely from Kyoho, a large-berried Japanese table grape, rather than a traditional wine grape variety.
How is this wine made?
Using the méthode ancestrale (pétillant naturel): partially dried Kyoho grapes are foot-trodden and fermented with wild yeast, then bottled before fermentation finishes so the wine captures its own natural fizz, with no added sulfites and no fining or filtration.
What food pairs best with it?
It shines with Japanese food, especially tempura eaten with salt, sushi, and dashi-forward dishes, thanks to its bright acidity and gentle bubbles.
Does the vintage matter?
Yes — this is a small-batch wine released as a new vintage each year (bottlings have run from around 2018 through 2024), so grape ripeness, ABV, and exact character can shift slightly from one vintage to the next; it typically sells out quickly.
