About this wine
Volnay Premier Cru Champans from Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is one of the appellation's most historic and expressive Premier Crus, ranked among Volnay's three "Tête de Cuvée" climats by both Lavalle (1855) and Rodier (1920). The climat itself spans 11.19 hectares just north of Caillerets, of which d'Angerville owns roughly 3.98 hectares — its largest single holding — running the full length of the slope from a rocky limestone bench at the top to deeper, clay-rich soil below. Compared with the domaine's Clos des Ducs monopole, Champans offers more opulent fruit and earlier accessibility while retaining Volnay's trademark floral elegance.
A more approachable entry point to d'Angerville's style — floral, red-fruited, and silky with a medium body that doesn't demand years of cellaring.
Sommelier's Note
"Champans is the wine I recommend to those who want d'Angerville's magic without the Clos des Ducs price tag. It shows the same floral DNA but with more generous fruit and earlier drinkability."
