Domaine Kuentz-Bas is a historic Alsatian estate whose winemaking roots in Husseren-les-Châteaux — the highest village in Alsace — trace back to 1795, when Joseph Kuentz began producing wine there. The domaine took its present name in 1895 through the marriage of the Kuentz and Bas families. In 2004 the estate was acquired by Jean-Baptiste Adam, the fourteenth generation of a winemaking family active since 1614, who converted the vineyards to organic (certified 2007) and biodynamic (certified 2008) farming. The 10-hectare domaine includes prized parcels in the Grand Cru vineyards of Eichberg, Pfersigberg and Geisberg, and practices minimal-intervention winemaking — whole-cluster pressing, indigenous yeasts, extended lees aging and limited sulfur — to let the estate's marl-limestone and volcanic terroirs speak clearly through wines dominated by Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. In the United States, Kuentz-Bas is imported by Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant.
