Domaine Armand Gilg

ドメーヌ・アルマン・ジルグ

Guardian of Zotzenberg, Alsace's only Grand Cru for Sylvaner.

Domaine Armand Gilg is a family estate in Mittelbergheim, Alsace, whose winegrowing roots trace back to 1601, when the Gilg family — originally from Graz, Austria — settled in the village; the domain's own wine history properly began in 1937, and today the estate is run by the 16th generation (Thierry Gilg, Jean-Christophe Lehner and Nelly Gilg). The estate farms roughly 30 hectares spread across Mittelbergheim and the neighbouring communes of Eichhoffen, Andlau, Barr and Gertwiller, certified in Organic Agriculture since the 2021 harvest and worked along biodynamic lines (lunar calendar, no pesticides, estate-made compost). Two of its cellars date from 1572 and 1585. The domain is best known for its Zotzenberg Grand Cru — the only Grand Cru in Alsace where Sylvaner is officially authorised (by a 2005 decree) alongside Riesling and Gewurztraminer — as well as for wines from the Moenchberg Grand Cru, Klevener de Heiligenstein, Crémant d'Alsace (about a quarter of the roughly 200,000 bottles produced annually), Vendanges Tardives and Sélections de Grains Nobles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Domaine Armand Gilg an organic or biodynamic producer?
Yes. The estate's roughly 30 hectares have been certified in Organic Agriculture since the 2021 harvest, and the family also works along biodynamic lines, following the lunar calendar and making its own compost without pesticides.
What makes Domaine Armand Gilg's Zotzenberg wines special?
Zotzenberg is the only Grand Cru in Alsace officially authorised to grow Sylvaner (by decree since 2005), alongside Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Domaine Armand Gilg's Zotzenberg Sylvaner is considered a benchmark expression of this rare grand cru designation.
How long has the Gilg family been making wine in Mittelbergheim?
The Gilg family, originally from Graz in Austria, settled in Mittelbergheim in 1601, and the estate is now run by the 16th generation. Its dedicated wine-growing history began in earnest in 1937.
What other wines does Domaine Armand Gilg produce besides Zotzenberg?
Beyond the Zotzenberg Grand Cru, the estate also produces wine from the Moenchberg Grand Cru, Klevener de Heiligenstein, Crémant d'Alsace (about a quarter of its ~200,000 annual bottles), Vendanges Tardives and Sélections de Grains Nobles.
Do Domaine Armand Gilg wines pair well with food?
Yes — the range is built for the table: Pinot Gris pairs with charcuterie, poultry and mushroom dishes, Gewurztraminer suits foie gras and spiced or exotic cuisine, Muscat is excellent with scallop tartare, and the Crémant d'Alsace makes a classic aperitif.
