Castello di Montepò is a historic medieval estate in the Scansano countryside of the Maremma, on Tuscany's coast, purchased by Jacopo Biondi Santi in the late 1980s. Set within a 600-hectare property that includes about 50-55 hectares of vineyards, it is the only estate where the Biondi Santi family — creators of Brunello di Montalcino in the 19th century — continues to make wine with their own hands, independently of the historic Tenuta Greppo house in Montalcino. The vineyards are planted mainly to Sangiovese Grosso (including the family's proprietary BBS11 clone), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, farmed without irrigation to encourage deep rooting and concentrated fruit. Since 2017 Jacopo's son Tancredi Biondi Santi, the seventh generation of the family, has directed production, pursuing vineyard micro-zoning research with the Universities of Florence and Pisa while keeping the estate's Morellino di Scansano DOCG and Toscana IGT wines — including Sassoalloro, Schidione and the JeT rosé — true to a philosophy of respecting tradition without being bound by it.
