Castello di Bolgheri is a historic wine estate built around the 13th-century Bolgheri Castle, located right beside the famous Viale dei Cipressi in the heart of the Bolgheri DOC on the Tuscan coast. The castle and its surrounding land belonged to the Della Gherardesca family for centuries before passing by inheritance to the Zileri Dal Verme family; current owner Federico Zileri Dal Verme is a relative of the Incisa della Rocchetta family of Tenuta San Guido, the estate behind Sassicaia. The family began converting the castle's historic land into vineyard in 1996 and started estate-bottling its own wine soon after. Today roughly 55 hectares are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, producing the estate's two flagship wines, the entry-level Varvàra and the more structured Bolgheri Superiore, both of which have earned strong scores from critics including James Suckling and Wine Spectator.
