Bürgerspital Würzburger Stein Silvaner Großes Gewächs
WhiteSilvaner
This wine is a pinnacle of Franconian viticulture, sourced entirely from the legendary Würzburger Stein vineyard — one of Germany's most celebrated single vineyards, with continuous cultivation since at least 779 AD. Produced by the historic charitable institution Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist, founded in 1316, this Silvaner Großes Gewächs (GG) represents the highest quality level of dry wine in Germany as classified by the VDP. The Würzburger Stein's Muschelkalk (Triassic shell limestone) soils impart a distinctive flinty minerality and saline precision to the wine. After hand-harvesting from the steepest terraces, fermentation proceeds in large traditional oak barrels (Stückfass) or stainless steel, followed by extended lees contact that enhances texture and depth. The result is a bone-dry, full-bodied white wine of remarkable complexity: yellow apple, ripe pear, white peach, a pronounced mineral spine, subtle herbal-earthy notes, and an extraordinarily long, saline finish. It can age gracefully for 10 to 20 years.
