Wonnegau limestone Riesling pioneer, biodynamic since 2005

About Battenfeld-Spanier

Battenfeld-Spanier is a VDP estate in Hohen-Sülzen, in the Wonnegau district of southern Rheinhessen, founded by Hans Oliver Spanier in 1991. A pioneer of organic and, since 2005, biodynamic viticulture in the region, the estate farms roughly 30 hectares planted mostly to Riesling (about 70%) and Spätburgunder, with small amounts of Weissburgunder and Silvaner. Its wines draw their signature saline minerality from limestone-rich Wonnegau soils, expressed most purely in the VDP.Grosse Lage sites Kirchenstück, Frauenberg, Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott and Kreuzberg. Though run jointly with the neighboring Kühling-Gillot estate since 2006 (led by Spanier and his wife Carolin Spanier-Gillot), Battenfeld-Spanier remains a distinct brand with its own vineyards and a leaner, more mineral-driven style.
