Vinum's 2024 Rising Star from Bühl in Baden's Ortenau.

About Axel Bauer

Weingut Axel Bauer is a small winery in Bühl, in the Ortenau district of Baden, Germany, near the French border. Axel Bauer, a former marketing professional, began making wine himself in 2012 and took over a regional estate in 2015; the winery was formally established as Weingut Axel Bauer GmbH in 2019 in partnership with oenologist Torsten Klein (Geisenheim-trained, with experience at Schlossgut Diel and Meyer-Näkel). Farming is organic, yields are strictly limited, and wines are fermented spontaneously without added yeasts or enzymes. Alongside classic Burgunder varieties (Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder) and Chardonnay, the estate also plants heat-tolerant varieties such as Syrah, Grenache and Malbec. The estate was named 'Aufsteiger des Jahres' (Rising Star) for Baden in the Vinum Weinguide Deutschland 2024, and was also named Baden's 'Winzer des Jahres' in 2023. Note: press reports from 2025 indicate the company entered insolvency proceedings and liquidation, so its current trading status should be reconfirmed before purchase recommendations.
