Yachimata is a small city in Chiba Prefecture, about an hour east of Tokyo, historically famous for its peanut farming. Grape growing began at Yamamoto Farm in 2010, and after recovering from severe damage caused by Typhoon 15 in 2019, the farm opened Sawa Wines in October 2021 — the city's first winery and a pioneer of Yachimata's new "wine special zone" (wine tokku) designation, which lowers the barrier for small producers to obtain brewing licenses. The area's well-drained soil, strong winds, and moderate rainfall create dry, disease-resistant growing conditions well suited to grapes, and growers use grass cover cultivation to keep vines healthy. Around six grape varieties are cultivated, led by Koshu, Chardonnay, and Muscat Bailey A, producing fresh, citrus-driven whites and light, fruity reds and rosés.
