Vignavecchia

ヴィニャヴェッキア

18th-century Radda estate, family-run since 1876, prized for classic, acid-driven Sangiovese.

Vignavecchia is a historic Chianti Classico estate located about one kilometer from the village of Radda in Chianti, in the province of Siena. Vineyards on the property date back to the 18th century under the Minucci family, and the estate passed to the Beccari family in the mid-19th century, when Antonietta Minucci married Giuseppe Beccari. The winery as it is known today was founded in 1876 by Prof. Odoardo Beccari, a noted Florentine botanist, zoologist and explorer, and was a founding member (No. 3) of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico in 1924. It remains family-owned, now run by Orsola Beccari, Odoardo's great-granddaughter, with Jessica Rovai as resident oenologist. The estate farms roughly 19 hectares of vineyard (about 70% Sangiovese, plus Canaiolo, Colorino, Merlot, Cabernet and a small amount of Chardonnay) and 3 hectares of olive groves. Winemaking follows a traditional, low-intervention approach, favoring stainless steel and concrete for fermentation and long aging in barrique or larger old oak, to preserve the pronounced acidity, floral aromatics and drinkability characteristic of high-altitude Radda Sangiovese. Its flagship Riserva and Gran Selezione bottlings are released under the 'Vigneto Odoardo Beccari' name in honor of the estate's founder.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is Vignavecchia and who founded it?
The vineyards date to the 18th century under the Minucci family, but the estate as a winery was founded in 1876 by Prof. Odoardo Beccari, a Florentine botanist and explorer, after the property passed to the Beccari family through marriage.
Is Vignavecchia still family-owned?
Yes. The estate has remained in the Beccari family since the 19th century and is currently run by Orsola Beccari, the great-granddaughter of founder Odoardo Beccari, with Jessica Rovai as resident oenologist.
What is Vignavecchia's winemaking philosophy?
Vignavecchia aims to produce honest wines that faithfully express the Radda in Chianti terroir, using stainless steel or concrete for fermentation and long aging in barrique or older oak rather than heavy new-oak treatment, to preserve natural acidity, floral aromatics and drinkability.
What grape varieties does Vignavecchia grow?
The roughly 19 hectares of vineyard are planted mostly to Sangiovese (about 70%), with Canaiolo, Colorino, Merlot, Cabernet, and a small amount of Chardonnay for white and dessert wines such as Vin Santo.
What is the 'Vigneto Odoardo Beccari' label?
It is Vignavecchia's top Chianti Classico Riserva and Gran Selezione bottling, a blend of roughly 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo named in honor of the estate's 1876 founder.
