Founded in 1937 by fourteen local growers, Vecchia Cantina di Montepulciano is the oldest wine cooperative in Tuscany and the largest in the Montepulciano area. Today the cooperative brings together roughly 400 member growers farming close to 1,000 hectares of vineyards across the provinces of Siena, Arezzo and Perugia, the majority under organic cultivation. Vecchia Cantina holds Equalitas sustainability certification and produces several wine lines — including Vecchia Cantina, Poggio Stella, Francesco Redi and Astorre Noti — built around Sangiovese (locally called Prugnolo Gentile), the backbone grape of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. In 2026 the cooperative joined Gruppo Caviro, Italy's largest wine cooperative group, while continuing to bottle and age wine at its historic Montepulciano headquarters with its underground barrel cellars.
