Uccelliera

ウッチェリエーラ

Cult Castelnuovo dell'Abate estate crafting powerful, modern Brunello.

Uccelliera is a boutique estate in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, in the southeastern corner of the Montalcino appellation, founded by Andrea Cortonesi after he purchased the property in 1986 (his first vintage followed in 1991, with just 500 bottles). Cortonesi, who trained as cellar master at neighboring Ciacci Piccolomini, farms the estate's vineyards entirely by hand on loose, stony soil under a warm microclimate. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented on indigenous yeasts, and the flagship Brunello di Montalcino ages roughly 36 months in oak vessels of varying sizes. The resulting wines are powerful, richly fruited, and polished, and have become cult favorites among collectors; the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva scored 98 points from Wine Spectator.
