Founded in 1916 in the Kikyogahara district of Shiojiri, Nagano, Sinano Wine is one of Japan's oldest continuously family-run wineries, now led by its fourth generation. The winery helped pioneer Merlot cultivation in the region's gravelly, diurnally-swinging terroir, alongside Niagara, Concord, and Chardonnay. Its aged Kikyogahara Merlot has won gold at Japan's national wine competition and medals at international competitions in the UK and Slovenia, and was once served in ANA's international first-class cabin. Sinano Wine blends traditional, low-intervention techniques with modern viticultural science learned in Japan and the United States.
