Roberto Mascelloni runs a small, family-owned organic estate called Poggio al Vento in Castiglione d'Orcia, in the heart of Tuscany's Val d'Orcia. His family purchased the historic farmhouse in 1961 and has bottled wine under the family name since 1960, becoming one of the ten founding producers who won Orcia DOC status on 14 February 2000. Farming around 13 hectares that also host an agriturismo, olive groves, and certified-organic vineyards, Roberto grows Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and the rare indigenous variety Foglia Tonda, producing roughly 15,000 bottles a year. His entry-level '01 Sangiovese' and flagship blend 'Arcere' (about 90% Sangiovese with Foglia Tonda and Merlot) both carry an archer emblem, a nod to Mascelloni's own background as a champion archer. Note: this Poggio al Vento in Castiglione d'Orcia is a distinct, small organic estate — not to be confused with the identically named single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino Riserva produced by Col d'Orcia in Montalcino.
