Poggio al Grillo is a tiny, family-run estate in Castagneto Carducci, at the heart of the Bolgheri DOC zone on the Tuscan coast. It was founded by cardiologist Alessandro Scalzini, who planted the first half-hectare of Aleatico in 2008, and is now guided by his daughter Giulia Scalzini, an enologist and agronomist with research experience spanning Pisa, Piedmont, Sicily and France. Just two hectares are farmed organically, planted to Aleatico, Petit Manseng, Trebbiano, long white Malvasia, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. A registered member of the Consorzio del Vino Bolgheri e Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, the estate makes deliberately personal wines that depart from Bolgheri's more classical, internationally-styled reds — including aging red wine in ceramic vessels. Its flagship red, Guado delle Casaline (a Bolgheri DOC blend of roughly 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Sangiovese), and its white Corvallo (mainly Petit Manseng) have drawn attention from critics including Decanter. Note: Poggio al Grillo is a distinct producer from the larger Bolgheri estate Tenuta Ceralti, which separately bottles an unrelated wine also named 'Poggio al Grillo' after the same hillside site.
