Founded in 1973 by Mario Barbero, Pertinace (officially Cantina Vignaioli Elvio Pertinace) is a cooperative winery based in the hamlet of Pertinace in Treiso, in the heart of the Barbaresco zone. What began as a group of 13 growers has grown to 20 member families, most descended from the founders, farming roughly 110 hectares across Treiso's high-altitude hillsides. The estate name honors the Roman emperor Publius Helvius Pertinax, said to have been born in the hamlet. Focused from the outset on Nebbiolo, Pertinace produces structured, terroir-driven Barbaresco — including several single-vineyard bottlings — alongside Barolo and other Langhe wines, balancing modern winemaking precision with respect for local tradition.
