Organic winery-resort overlooking San Gimignano's towers
Mormoraia is an organic wine estate set among the hills of San Gimignano, Tuscany, built around a former 18th-century convent. Founded in 1980 when Milanese entrepreneur Giuseppe "Pino" Passoni and his wife Franca acquired the abandoned convent and replanted its surrounding vineyards, the estate opened its first winery in 1995. Since 2012 it has been run by their son Alessandro Passoni, who oversaw full organic conversion (certified since 2013) and the estate's growth into a wine tourism destination. The roughly 100-hectare property includes about 40 hectares of vineyard and 10 hectares of olive groves, producing around ten wines led by Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG (Suavis, Ostrea) and Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG (Haurio), alongside a Bordeaux-style blend, a Sangiovese-Merlot-Syrah rosé, and extra virgin olive oil. Mormoraia is also a well-known agriturismo, with 28 guestrooms, a wellness area, a swimming pool, a wine bar (Le Volte), and a restaurant overlooking San Gimignano's medieval towers.
