Niagara

About this wine

Amber-hued orange wine from 50-year-old heritage Niagara vines, produced using 19 days of skin contact. The 2023 vintage reflects a hot, rainy season in Yoichi in which the old Niagara vines ripened exceptionally well, contributing depth, concentration, and complexity from the extended maceration. Priced at ¥3,080.

Beginner's Note

Niagara grapes are known for their distinctive Muscat-like floral aroma. In this amber style, the extended skin contact adds texture and depth while the Niagara's natural fragrance remains. It is fuller-bodied than the Orange Delaware and pairs well with richer dishes.

Sommelier's Note

"Nineteen days of skin contact from 50-year-old Niagara vines: this is as serious a Japanese orange wine as you will find. The concentration from the ancient vines, combined with Yoichi's terroir, produces a wine that demands food—and rewards it with extraordinary synergy."

Food Pairings

Rich Hokkaido dishes: butter-sautéed king crab, braised Hokkaido pork (buta no kakuni), aged Hokkaido cheese, mushroom risotto, and miso-glazed grilled fish.

When to drink it

Autumn and winter Hokkaido dinners, hotpot (nabe) parties, cheese boards, natural wine enthusiast gatherings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes 50-year-old vines special?
Old vines develop extensive root systems that access deeper soil layers, reducing water and nutrient stress. This produces lower yields of grapes with greater concentration, complexity, and a more direct expression of terroir. Misono Vineyard's 50-year-old Niagara vines are among the oldest in Yoichi.
What does '19 days of skin contact' mean for flavor?
Extended skin contact extracts more tannin, texture, and phenolic compounds than brief maceration, resulting in a richer mouthfeel, deeper amber color, and greater longevity. The 2023 vintage benefited from the old vines' exceptional ripening despite the challenging weather.
Is Niagara wine sweet? Is Amber Niagara sweet too?
Niagara grapes are prized for their fragrant, Muscat-like aroma and are usually vinified into sweet or off-dry wines in Japan. Misono Vineyard's Amber Niagara breaks that mold: full fermentation and 19 days of skin contact drive the sugar down to a crisp, dry finish with notes of nashi pear, Fuji apple, and mineral grapefruit, while the variety's signature floral perfume remains intact.
