Precision winemaking born from a semiconductor factory
Founded in April 2017 in Katsunuma, Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, MGVs Winery was launched by Shioyama Seisakusho, a local semiconductor processing company, as a bold pivot into winemaking. The winery renovated a former semiconductor factory, repurposing the nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas systems once used to protect silicon wafers from oxidation to now prevent oxidation of grape must instead. Applying the strict quality control, hygiene, and process-management discipline of semiconductor manufacturing, MGVs specializes in Koshu and Muscat Bailey A, Japan's signature indigenous grape varieties, producing wines prized for their clarity and purity. The winery has been recognized at the Japan Wine Competition (2017, one silver and two bronze awards) and won gold medals at the Berliner Wine Trophy 2023 for both a single-vineyard Koshu and a GI Yamanashi blend.
