Historic Ammerschwihr house famed for its "Caves de l'Enfer" and major Crémant d'Alsace production.

Founded in 1675 in Ammerschwihr, Maison Kuehn (also known as Vins d'Alsace Kuehn) is one of Alsace's historic wine houses, famed for its "Caves de l'Enfer" (Cellars of Hell) — deep 17th-century cellars carved into the rock by Baron Jean-Jacques de Schielé, which sheltered villagers during WWII and now house forty-five century-old oak foudres, the oldest dating to 1850. The estate farms roughly 12-16 hectares of its own vines on the sun-drenched slopes of Ammerschwihr under sustainable ("raisonnée") viticulture, while also sourcing fruit to supply its large-scale négociant activity — making it one of the region's most significant producers of Crémant d'Alsace, reputedly bottling around one million bottles a year. Winemaking is overseen by oenologist Francis Klee, a member of the Confrérie Saint-Étienne. Beyond its crémants, Kuehn is a leading vigneron of the Kaefferkopf Grand Cru, a 71-hectare cru classified in 2007 and planted exclusively to Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris.
