A sommelier's destination winery on Yatsugatake's slopes

Komaki Vineyard is a destination winery in Kobuchisawa, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, on the southern slopes of the Yatsugatake mountains at roughly 820 meters elevation, with views toward Mt. Kaikoma and Mt. Fuji. The estate was founded by Yasunobu Komaki, a longtime sommelier who spent nearly three decades at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo — including two years serving at the Japanese ambassador's residence in New York, where he witnessed the American wine boom firsthand — and who earned the Japan Sommelier Association's senior-level Excellence qualification. After retiring from the Imperial Hotel in 2003, he and his wife Michiko began planting Merlot vines on the property in 2005. In 2025 the couple opened their own on-site winery, Domaine Enchante, and released Komaki Vineyard's first estate-bottled vintage. The vineyard is farmed organically alongside blueberries, growing Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Barbera, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gewürztraminer. Signature bottlings include a Merlot-based Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine made by the traditional method with long lees aging. Beyond winemaking, Komaki Vineyard operates as an agritourism stay-type winery, offering guests glamping-style lodging among the vines and birch trees, vineyard yoga, and evening campfire stargazing paired with wine.
