Piedmont's last great traditionalist, master of Monprivato
Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio is one of Piedmont's most revered traditionalist estates, founded in 1881 and based in Castiglione Falletto in the heart of the Barolo zone. The family acquired the legendary Monprivato vineyard in 1904 and today owns over 90% of this historic cru, first documented in 1566. Now led by fourth-generation Mauro Mascarello alongside his daughter Elena, the estate remains defiantly classical: long macerations, aging in large old Slavonian oak botti (no new barriques, no roto-fermenters), and bottling unfined and unfiltered. Its flagship Barolo Monprivato and the rare Riserva Ca' d'Morissio, made only in exceptional vintages, are benchmarks for age-worthy, traditional Nebbiolo. In the 1960s-70s the estate also released small quantities of Barbaresco (notably the Barbaresco Bernadotti Riserva), though production today is concentrated almost entirely on Barolo.
