ガッタヴェッキ
Historic Montepulciano cellar carved into tuff, with an Etruscan tomb below.
Gattavecchi is a historic, family-run winery in the heart of Montepulciano, Tuscany, now in its fourth generation under the Gattavecchi family. Founded by Vincenzo Gattavecchi and revived after World War II by Valente Gattavecchi and his mother Sidonia, the winery expanded in 1958 when it acquired the Simoneschi-Baroncelli cellar — an underground cave carved into tuff stone beneath the 13th-century Convento dei Padri Serviti, with an Etruscan tomb over 2,000 years old still visible at its lowest level. Gattavecchi began producing Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in 1966, the same year the wine achieved Italy's first DOC status. Grapes are sourced from the family's historic vineyards at Argiano, Cervognano, and Le Caggiole, prized zones for growing Prugnolo Gentile (the local Sangiovese clone). Wines age in the cool, constant conditions of the cellar in large barrels of Slavonian and French oak. Alongside the cellar and tasting rooms, the estate operates La Cucina di Lilian, a restaurant serving traditional Tuscan cuisine paired with the family's wines.
