About this wine

Château Furano is the flagship red wine of Furano Winery, the municipal winery of Furano City in Hokkaido. It is a blend of the locally bred hybrid grape Furano No. 2 (a cross of Seibel 13053 and wild Yamabudo grapes, selected in 1985 for cold hardiness) with Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The wine shows a garnet color with aromas of raspberry, cherry, and shiso (Japanese perilla), leading to a medium-bodied palate with moderate tannins and balanced acidity that reflects the wide diurnal temperature swings of the Furano Basin.

Beginner's Note

An approachable, medium-bodied introduction to Hokkaido red wine, with soft tannins that make it easy to enjoy even for those new to Japanese wine.

Sommelier's Note

"Furano Winery's signature red, built around the winery's own Furano No. 2 hybrid — a rare chance to taste a grape variety that exists nowhere else, blended into a genuinely food-friendly Hokkaido red."

Food Pairings

A versatile match for grilled red meats, lamb, and game dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. The shiso-like herbal note also makes it a surprisingly good partner for Japanese dishes such as grilled eel (unagi) and soy-based simmered dishes (nimono).

When to drink it

Everyday dinners with grilled meats or Japanese home cooking, and casual gatherings.
