Carmignano's pioneering producer of single-vineyard crus
Fattoria Ambra is a historic family-owned estate in Carmignano, Tuscany, that has belonged to the Romei Rigoli family since the second half of the 19th century. Named after Lorenzo de' Medici's 15th-century poem about the nymph Ambra, the estate has been guided since 1983 by agronomist and oenologist Giuseppe "Beppe" Rigoli, who pioneered the separate vinification and bottling of single-vineyard (cru) wines in Carmignano — starting with the 1983 vintage of Santa Cristina in Pilli, at a time when most local producers still sold their wine in bulk. Today the estate's 24 hectares are divided among four historic crus — Montalbiolo, Elzana, Santa Cristina in Pilli, and Montefortini-Podere Lombarda — each vinified and bottled separately to express its distinct terroir. Sangiovese is blended predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Canaiolo Nero, following the style codified by Cosimo III de' Medici's 1716 decree that established Carmignano as one of the world's oldest protected wine appellations. The estate's wines have been certified organic since the 2018 vintage, and its Carmignano Santa Cristina in Pilli received Gambero Rosso's Tre Bicchieri award in the 2019 guide.
