Domaine Mittnacht Frères

ドメーヌ・ミットナット・フレール

Biodynamic pioneer in Hunawihr, Alsace, celebrated for Grand Cru terroir wines and Crémant.

Domaine Mittnacht Frères is a family estate at the foot of the fortified church in Hunawihr, Alsace, making wine since 1963. Today the 11-hectare domaine (legally E.A.R.L. Mittnacht Frères) is run by Marc Mittnacht together with his wife Paule and their son Pierre, farming prized parcels in the Grand Cru Rosacker (Hunawihr) and Grand Cru Osterberg (Ribeauvillé). The estate converted to organic and Demeter-certified biodynamic viticulture in 1999, among the very first in Alsace to do so. In the cellar the approach is hands-off: indigenous-yeast fermentation in neutral old oak foudres lets each plot's minerality and terroir speak clearly across a range spanning Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Sylvaner and a widely praised Crémant d'Alsace. Note: a related but separate domaine, Domaine Christophe Mittnacht (run by Christophe Mittnacht, from the other founding brother's branch of the family), is a distinct producer and should not be confused with this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Domaine Mittnacht Frères certified biodynamic?
Yes. The estate converted to organic farming and earned Demeter biodynamic certification in 1999, making it one of the earliest biodynamic converts in Alsace.
What Grand Cru vineyards does the domaine farm?
The family holds parcels in Grand Cru Rosacker in Hunawihr (well suited to Riesling) and Grand Cru Osterberg in Ribeauvillé (well suited to Gewurztraminer).
Is Domaine Mittnacht Frères the same as Domaine Christophe Mittnacht?
No. They share family roots — the estate was founded in 1963 by brothers André and Louis Mittnacht — but today they are two separate, independently run domaines: Mittnacht Frères under Marc Mittnacht, and Domaine Christophe Mittnacht under Christophe Mittnacht.
What makes their Crémant d'Alsace stand out?
It is made with the same care as their still wines from old vines (25+ years), typically blending Pinot Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, aged around 18 months on the lees for a dry, mineral, finely bubbled style.
