Domaine Ginglinger Jean-François (legally EARL Jean Ginglinger & Fils) is a small biodynamic estate in Pfaffenheim, a village in central Alsace about 12 kilometers south of Colmar. The Ginglinger family has been growing vines in the area since 1610; the modern domaine was founded by Jean Ginglinger in the 1960s, and his son Jean-François took over the 6.5-hectare property in 1999, including parcels in the Grand Cru Steinert vineyard. Jean-François converted the vineyards to organic farming in the 1990s, earned Ecocert certification in 1999 and Demeter biodynamic certification in 2001, and has ploughed with a horse instead of machinery for the past several years to protect soil life. Since 2003, when he first vinified his Pinot Noir Steiner without sulfites, he has extended a no-added-sulfite, native-yeast, minimal-intervention approach across the whole range. The estate produces the seven classic Alsace varieties — Sylvaner, Riesling, Muscat d'Alsace, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir — plus a Crémant d'Alsace, in cuvées such as Paradies, Steiner, Ruest, BIHL, and KS, prized for their purity, salinity, and terroir transparency.
