Domaine André et Lucas Rieffel

ドメーヌ・アンドレ・エ・リュカ・リフェル

Three generations of precise, terroir-driven Alsace wines

Domaine André et Lucas Rieffel is a three-generation family estate in Mittelbergheim, Alsace, founded in 1946 when Julien Rieffel began estate-bottling his own Sylvaner. His son André expanded the domaine through the 1970s-80s, adding a parcel in the Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr, and in 1996 Lucas Rieffel took over, later acquiring vines in the Grand Cru Wiebelsberg in Andlau. The estate now farms roughly 10 hectares across Mittelbergheim, Barr and Andlau, including the celebrated Grand Crus Zotzenberg, Wiebelsberg and Kirchberg de Barr. Converted to organic farming from 2009 and certified from the 2012 vintage, Lucas crafts precise, terroir-driven wines — from a benchmark Sylvaner Zotzenberg (one of the few Grand Crus authorized for the variety) to floral, infusion-vinified Pinot Noirs and vibrant Crémant d'Alsace. His guiding principle: no natural wine if the vintage doesn't allow for it — pragmatism over dogma, purity above all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Domaine André et Lucas Rieffel's winemaking philosophy?
Lucas Rieffel sums it up as "no natural wine if the vintage doesn't allow for it" — he prioritizes purity and terroir expression over strict adherence to natural-wine dogma, adapting his approach vintage by vintage.
Which Grand Cru vineyards does the estate farm?
The domaine farms three Grand Crus: Zotzenberg and Kirchberg de Barr in Mittelbergheim/Barr, plus Wiebelsberg in Andlau, alongside various lieux-dits across the villages.
Is the estate certified organic?
Yes. Lucas Rieffel began converting to organic farming in 2009, and the 2012 vintage was the first certified under France's AB organic label.
What is special about the Sylvaner Zotzenberg?
Zotzenberg is one of the very few Alsace Grand Crus (by a 2005 decree) permitted to bottle Sylvaner as Grand Cru wine, and the domaine's old-vine bottling from 50-60 year-old vines is considered a benchmark expression of the variety.
Do Domaine Rieffel wines pair well with Japanese cuisine?
Their bright acidity and mineral precision — especially the Riesling and Sylvaner — make them versatile partners for sashimi, tempura and other delicate Japanese dishes.
