About this wine
Kokonoaru Pinot Roze is a collaboration rosé between 10R Winery and Coco Farm & Winery, made from 100% Pinot Noir grown at the famed Kimura Farm in Yoichi, Hokkaido. First produced experimentally in 2013 as an attempt to make rosé from grapes intended for red wine, it proved so successful that it became an annual release refined vintage by vintage. The grapes undergo whole-cluster carbonic maceration at low temperatures unique to Hokkaido's cool climate, then ferment with wild yeast in used barrels and stainless steel tanks, aging on the lees. The result is a dry rosé with the complexity and depth of a red wine and the freshness and elegance of a white.
A dry rosé complex enough for wine geeks yet approachable enough for first-timers — Japan's answer to Provence, but with more soul and better food pairing.
Sommelier's Note
"Kokonoaru Pinot Roze is the rare Japanese rosé that punches above its weight — carbonic maceration complexity, Hokkaido's electric acidity, and Kimura Farm's Pinot Noir make this one of the most compelling dry rosés produced in Asia. If you only try one Japanese rosé, make it this one."
Food Pairings
Exceptional versatility — grilled salmon (chanchangyaki), steamed snow crab, sashimi, smoked salmon with cream cheese, pressed sushi with seared saba, vegetable tempura, pork shabu-shabu with plum and shiso, chicken karaage, and jerk chicken all work beautifully. The dry, umami-driven character handles rich Japanese cuisine effortlessly.
