Clos L'Église (Castillon)

クロ・レグリーズ(カスティヨン)

A Gérard Perse masterpiece from the Sainte-Colombe plateau, where clay-limestone soils yield Castillon's most structured and age-worthy reds.

Clos L'Église (Castillon) was a prestigious estate in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, situated on the Sainte-Colombe plateau — the highest point in the appellation — with exceptional clay and limestone soils. Owned by Gérard Perse (also proprietor of Château Pavie), the 16-hectare vineyard was planted with 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, many vines averaging 33 years or older. Yields were kept extremely low at around 35 hl/ha, and wines were aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The estate produced distinctive, terroir-driven Right Bank Bordeaux blends marked by ripe dark fruit, earthy minerality, and elegant structure. Note: Not to be confused with the celebrated Clos l'Église in Pomerol. 2008 was the final vintage; the vineyard fruit was subsequently incorporated into Esprit de Pavie, the Vignobles Perse multi-estate cuvée.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Clos L'Église (Castillon) the same as the famous Clos l'Église in Pomerol?
No. The two estates share a similar name but are entirely separate properties. Clos l'Église in Pomerol is one of the appellation's most celebrated estates, while Clos L'Église (Castillon) was owned by Gérard Perse — the man behind Château Pavie — and operated in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation.
When was the last vintage of Clos L'Église (Castillon)?
2008 was the final vintage. After that harvest, Gérard Perse decided to incorporate the vineyard's fruit into Esprit de Pavie, a multi-estate cuvée from the Vignobles Perse portfolio that includes grapes from Château Pavie, Monbousquet, and other properties.
What made this estate special within Castillon?
The estate sat on the Sainte-Colombe plateau, the highest point in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. The clay-limestone terroir and very low yields (around 35 hl/ha) gave the wines unusual concentration and structure for the appellation. Gérard Perse applied the same meticulous standards here as at his flagship Château Pavie.
What grape varieties were used in the wine?
The vineyard was planted to 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon — a classic Right Bank blend. The old vines (averaging 33+ years) helped produce naturally concentrated, complex fruit.
How was the wine made and aged?
Winemaking was extremely rigorous: yields were held below 35 hl/ha, and the wine was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels, spending the first six months on fine lees. The final blend was assembled just before bottling, without fining or filtration.
