Biodynamic Pauillac 5th Growth with agroforestry innovation by Claire Villars-Lurton

Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a 5th Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, situated in Pauillac on the Bages plateau between Pauillac and Saint-Julien. The estate takes its name from the Libéral family, who built their fortune here in the 18th century. Acquired by Jacques Merlaut in 1982 and bequeathed to his granddaughter Claire Villars-Lurton in 2000, the château has been transformed under her stewardship into one of Bordeaux's most forward-thinking estates. Spanning 30 hectares with an average vine age of 40 years, the vineyards sit adjacent to Château Latour and Château Pichon-Lalande, sharing deep gravel soils over clay and limestone. The estate achieved organic certification in 2019 and Demeter biodynamic certification in 2022, and cultivates the largest certified biodynamic vineyard area in Bordeaux together with the Lurton family estates. Claire pioneered agroforestry practices in the Médoc, planting hedges and trees throughout the vineyards to promote biodiversity and soil health. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, aged 12 months in barrel (60%) and amphora/ovoid tanks (40%), with only 20% new oak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who owns Château Haut-Bages Libéral?
Since 2000, the estate is owned and managed by Claire Villars-Lurton, granddaughter of Jacques Merlaut who acquired it in 1982. Claire also manages Château Ferrière and Château La Gurgue, and together with her husband Gonzague Lurton, they operate the largest certified biodynamic vineyard area in Bordeaux.
Is Château Haut-Bages Libéral organic or biodynamic?
Yes. The estate achieved certified organic status in 2019 and received Demeter biodynamic certification in 2022. Claire Villars-Lurton has been converting the estate since 2007 and is a pioneer of agroforestry in the Médoc, planting hedges and trees throughout the vines to restore biodiversity.
How long should Château Haut-Bages Libéral be aged?
The wine benefits from at least 6–10 years of bottle age and reaches its peak between 10–20 years after the vintage. Great vintages such as 2020 can develop for several decades. It is vinified with only 20% new oak to preserve freshness and ensure elegant evolution.
What does Château Haut-Bages Libéral taste like?
Expect an expressive, full-bodied red with dark cherry, plum, blackcurrant, cedar, blood orange, incense, and licorice, underpinned by saline mineral notes from the clay-limestone soils adjacent to the Gironde. Claire aims for smooth tannins, real energy, and wines that are pleasurable young yet built to age.
What food pairs well with Château Haut-Bages Libéral?
Classic pairings include roast lamb, beef, duck, and game. The wine also suits braised veal, mushroom risotto, and hard aged cheeses. Given its mineral saline character, it pairs surprisingly well with umami-rich Japanese dishes such as wagyu beef, duck confit with teriyaki glaze, and aged miso-marinated grilled meats.
