Château du Grand Barrail

シャトー・デュ・グラン・バライユ

Organic and kosher-certified Blaye-Côtes de Bordeaux from calcareous clay hillsides above the Gironde estuary — supple Merlot-led reds with genuine Bordeaux character at excellent value.

Château du Grand Barrail is a 16-hectare estate situated on calcareous clay hillsides in Plassac, overlooking the Gironde estuary in Blaye-Côtes de Bordeaux. Originally purchased by Denis Lafon in 1967 as the founding estate of Vignobles Denis Lafon, it became fully certified organic (AB) in 2020 and produces both certified organic and kosher (Mevushal) wines. In 2025, the estate was acquired by Paul Guillet — who also owns Château Mazerolles — continuing the organic farming commitment with support from the regional fund VitiREV Terradev. The red wines feature a classic Bordeaux blend led by Merlot (65%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Malbec (5%), while white wines balance Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc equally. Multiple cuvées including La Révélation, Cuvée Prestige, and Cuvée Tradition each express the distinctive terroir of the Blaye hillsides.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Château du Grand Barrail distinctive among Blaye-Côtes de Bordeaux producers?
The estate holds both certified organic (AB) status since 2020 and kosher Mevushal certification — a rare combination in Bordeaux. Its calcareous clay hillside terroir in Plassac, overlooking the Gironde estuary, gives the wines a distinctive mineral backbone, and the estate's long history dating to 1967 brings production depth and accumulated terroir knowledge.
What grape varieties are used in the red wines?
The red wines are primarily made from Merlot (65%), blended with Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Malbec (5%). The vines average around 20 years of age, contributing to wines with ripe, concentrated fruit and supple tannins characteristic of the Blaye-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation.
When did Château du Grand Barrail obtain organic certification?
The estate began its organic conversion with the 2018 vintage, which was marketed as 'in conversion to organic agriculture.' Full AB (Agriculture Biologique) certification was granted in 2020. The 2025 acquisition by Paul Guillet continues and reinforces this organic commitment.
What cuvées does Château du Grand Barrail produce?
The estate produces three main red cuvées: Cuvée Tradition (approachable entry level), Cuvée Prestige (oak-barrel aged, more structured), and La Révélation (a top-tier selection from the finest parcels). White wines are also produced from a Sémillon (50%) and Sauvignon Blanc (50%) blend.
What food pairs best with these wines?
The Merlot-dominant reds pair beautifully with roasted beef, lamb, duck confit, and mild cheeses. The white wines, blending Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, complement fresh seafood from the Gironde estuary, roasted poultry, and goat cheeses — reflecting the regional cuisine of Bordeaux's right bank.
