Château Côte-Montpézat
シャトー・コート・モンペザ
Right Bank Bordeaux delivering Saint-Émilion-level terroir at Castillon prices, with France's top HVE Level 4 environmental certification and the legendary Compostelle cuvée.
Château Côte-Montpézat is a 30-hectare estate located 40 km east of Bordeaux, on the clay-limestone hillsides that form a direct extension of the Saint-Émilion plateau. Owned by Dominique Bessineau since 1989, the estate combines tradition with rigorous environmental stewardship: it holds HVE Level 4 (Haute Valeur Environnementale) — France's highest sustainable farming standard — the Bee Friendly label, and Terra Vitis certification since 2024. The vineyards, with an average vine age of 30 years, are planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Renowned consultant Michel Rolland guides winemaking, while Thomas Duclos has managed the vineyards since 2015. Vinification takes place in stainless steel vats, followed by barrel ageing in 30% new French oak. The estate's premium cuvée, Compostelle, draws its name from an ancient legend: 17th-century documents record that pilgrims on the Santiago de Compostela route stopped to draw water from the château's well. A member of the Grand Cercle des Vins de Bordeaux.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What makes Château Côte-Montpézat's terroir special?
- The estate sits on clay-limestone hillsides that are a direct continuation of the Saint-Émilion plateau, offering similar soil composition and natural drainage. This allows the Merlot to achieve the same depth and minerality found in the more celebrated neighbouring appellation, at a significantly more accessible price point.
- What environmental certifications does the estate hold?
- Château Côte-Montpézat holds HVE Level 4 (Haute Valeur Environnementale), the highest tier of France's national sustainable farming certification, along with the Bee Friendly label recognising pollinator-friendly vineyard management, and Terra Vitis certification since 2024.
- What is the Cuvée Compostelle and why is it special?
- Compostelle is the estate's flagship premium cuvée, named after the ancient Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. A 17th-century document records that pilgrims once quenched their thirst at the château's well. The wine is made from the best selected parcels and aged in a higher proportion of new French oak, delivering greater concentration and complexity than the estate wine.
- Who advises the winemaking at Château Côte-Montpézat?
- Legendary Bordeaux oenologist Michel Rolland serves as winemaking consultant, ensuring precision and elegance in every vintage. Since 2015, Thomas Duclos has overseen vineyard management, further elevating the quality of the raw material.
- What food pairings work best with these wines?
- The structured yet silky reds pair beautifully with grilled lamb, roast beef, duck confit, game dishes, and aged cheeses. Their fresh acidity also makes them versatile companions for mushroom and truffle preparations.
