Château Beaucastel

シャトー・ボーカステル

The only Châteauneuf producer to use all 13 permitted varieties — with Mourvèdre at 30%, producing wines of legendary longevity.

Château Beaucastel is one of the largest and most celebrated estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with 130 hectares of vines on the renowned Cru de Beaucastel plateau in the northern sector of the appellation. Founded by Pierre de Beaucastel in the early 17th century, the estate has been owned by the Perrin family since 1909. It is the only producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to consistently use all 13 permitted grape varieties in its red blend, with an unusually high proportion of Mourvèdre (around 30%) giving the wine its distinctive longevity and complexity. The estate pioneered organic and biodynamic viticulture in the region and has certified all its vineyards under organic practices since the 1950s. Marc and Jean-Pierre Perrin internationalized the estate's reputation, while the current generation continues the tradition. Beaucastel is also renowned for its white Châteauneuf — particularly the 'Roussanne Vieilles Vignes', made entirely from old Roussanne vines, considered one of the finest white wines in France.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Château Beaucastel use all 13 grape varieties?
The Perrin family believes each of the 13 permitted varieties contributes a unique dimension to the final blend — Grenache for richness and roundness, Mourvèdre for structure and longevity, Syrah for freshness and spice, Counoise for acidity and elegance, and so on. This philosophy, maintained for over a century, produces wines of extraordinary complexity that no single-variety or simpler blend can achieve.
How long does Château Beaucastel age?
Château Beaucastel red Châteauneuf-du-Pape regularly ages for 20–30 years, with great vintages like 1989, 1990, 2000, 2007, and 2010 capable of evolving beautifully for 40 years or more. The wine is often closed and tannic in youth — decanting for 3–4 hours or cellaring for at least 8–10 years is strongly recommended.
Is Château Beaucastel certified organic?
Yes. Beaucastel was one of the first estates in the region to adopt organic farming, beginning in the 1950s under Pierre Tramier. All 130 hectares are certified organic. The estate also practices biodynamic principles on select parcels, and since 2014 has been working toward full biodynamic certification.
What is the Hommage à Jacques Perrin?
Hommage à Jacques Perrin is Château Beaucastel's prestige cuvée, named after the late Jacques Perrin who transformed the estate in the 20th century. It is produced only in exceptional vintages from the estate's oldest and most exceptional Mourvèdre vines, blended with Grenache, Syrah, and Counoise. It is one of the most sought-after wines in the entire Rhône Valley.
Does Château Beaucastel make white wine?
Yes. Château Beaucastel produces two white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines: the regular white blend and the legendary 'Roussanne Vieilles Vignes' — made exclusively from very old Roussanne vines (some over 50 years old). The Vieilles Vignes is considered one of the finest and most age-worthy white wines in France, comparable to premier cru white Burgundy.
