Hokuto estate winery devoted to Cabernet Franc

Charmant Wine is a historic estate winery in the Hakushu and Takane districts of Hokuto City, Yamanashi, founded in 1963 by Eigashima Shuzo, a sake brewery based in Akashi, Hyogo. At the foot of the Southern Alps' Mt. Kaikomagatake, the winery has cultivated European wine grape varieties on its own vineyards since 1964, handling every step from grape growing to bottling in-house. Well-drained sandy soils and a cool, high-altitude climate with wide diurnal temperature swings make the area especially suited to Cabernet Franc, the winery's signature variety, alongside Koshu and Muscat Bailey A. Guided by the philosophy that 'good wine starts with good ingredients,' Charmant Wine practices cover-crop viticulture without herbicides or chemical fertilizers, limits yields to concentrate flavor, and hand-destems its top-tier wines to avoid stem-derived bitterness.
