Castello del Terriccio is one of the largest wine estates in Tuscany, spanning roughly 1,500 hectares around the medieval castle ruins of Terriccio, a hamlet of Castellina Marittima in the province of Pisa. The estate sits along the northern edge of the Maremma, just north of (but outside) the Bolgheri DOC zone, so its wines are bottled as Toscana IGT rather than Bolgheri DOC. The property's documented history stretches back to 1053, passing through the Gaetani counts and the Polish Poniatowski princes before the Serafini Ferri family acquired it after World War I. Its modern reputation as a producer of world-class Super Tuscans was built by Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana, who inherited the estate in 1975 and dedicated it to quality-focused viticulture; his nephew Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana has led the estate since late 2019. Of the roughly 1,500 hectares, about 65 are planted to vine and 40 to olive groves, with the Tyrrhenian Sea moderating the climate. The flagship wine is Lupicaia, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot blend first produced in 1993 that has earned Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso and gold medals at Decanter and Mundus Vini; other key labels include Tassinaia (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) and the estate's namesake Syrah-based Castello del Terriccio.
