Cantina Canaio

カンティーナ・カナイオ

Family-run Cortona boutique winery devoted to pure Syrah and Merlot.

Cantina Canaio is a boutique, family-run winery in the hills below the hilltop town of Cortona, in Tuscany's Arezzo province. The family's farmhouse at Località Vallone has belonged to them since the 1600s, and after decades of grape growing the family split the historic farm in 2012 and released their first estate-bottled vintage in 2014. Winemaker Mirco farms 4.5 hectares planted almost entirely to Syrah and Merlot, the two varieties best suited to Cortona's clay-rich terroir, producing pure varietal bottlings (Villa Passerini Syrah, Terra Solla Syrah, Chiorre Merlot) as well as the Syrah-Merlot blend MezzoRosso. The estate also makes extra virgin olive oil, Vinsanto, and Cortona's only Syrah-based grappa. The winery's name honors an ancestor nicknamed "il Canaio" for his passion for hunting hounds.
