Baricci is a historic family-run estate on the Montosoli hill in the northern part of the Montalcino appellation. Founded in 1955 when Nello Baricci purchased the eastern slope of Montosoli, the estate became founding member No. 1 of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967, registering the very first hectare of Brunello vineyard in Siena's Chamber of Commerce. Today the winery is run by Nello's grandsons, Federico and Francesco Buffi, who continue to farm the family's five hectares of Montosoli vineyard organically and vinify with traditional methods: hand harvesting, fermentation in stainless steel, and long aging in large Slavonian oak casks. Producing only three labels — Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli, and the Riserva Nello — Baricci is widely regarded as one of the definitive, benchmark producers of the Montosoli cru, earning scores in the high 90s from critics such as Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.
